Hey everyone ๐Ÿ‘‹

Many of you might already be busy planning for the holidays. Just before you get into the holiday mode in December, what do you plan to achieve or work on?

- can be work-related (ex. I am trying to finish our remote work survey & analysis for 2020)

- something in your personal life (ex. I want to shed some kilos to balance probable weight gain during the holidays ๐Ÿ˜Ž)

    - Getting my transition plan ready. I'm leaving my current employer this December and joining Postman in a few weeks.ย

    - Plan a basic itinerary for the new year trip.ย

    - Finish lubing my Gateron switches. Building my own mechanical keyboard.

    1. 2

Cool I would also like to see your mechanical keyboard.ย

As I am also a fan of mechanical keyboard.๐Ÿ˜…

      1. 2

That's pretty cool. I've heard some very positive things about Postman too. Congrats!

        1. 1

          Some really cool plans Prithvi.

Congrats on joining Postman ๐Ÿ‘I know a friend that works there and it's a great company to be a part of.

Where are you headed for the new year?

Do share pictures of the mechanical keyboard when you're done, a how-to post would be even better - would love to read.

          1. 2

            Thanks :)ย

Going to Munnar. Needed a break. I havenโ€™t taken a vacation in over two years. So, wanted to relax a bit before joining Postman.ย

Sure. I had a lot of plans to post under the hobbies topic. But with Aliexpress ban in India not sure if I can continue building MKBs. ๐Ÿ˜ญ

            1. 1

Great stuff - well deserved break!

Ah, that's an unnecessary setback for you ๐Ÿ˜The components aren't available elsewhere or are they expensive otherwise?ย

              1. 1

Only from China. So I have to rely on AliExpress.ย

Parts aren't available in India. Even if they are it's two or three times the price.

Now I have to find a new hobby.

                1. 1

                  Damn, that's a bummer :/

            2. 1

Finally received the last part yesterday evening. Spent the whole day lubing, taping, and building it. Here is a glimpse.

Still a lot of work left for it to be perfect. Sold the board for 20K. ๐Ÿ˜‡

              1. 1

                This looks really amazing Prithvi!

Wow, I didn't know mechanical keyboards are so expensive. But I am guessing it's primarily because you must have used high-quality components and also since it's hand-made :)

          2. 4

Working on clearly defining our ideal customer profile and getting my whole company aligned & bought-in.

            1. 1

Amazing Rachel. I am guessing it will be quite a task & choice given Voodle has so many offerings & is relevant in multiple use-cases. I would love it if you share your learnings in a separate post here - many of us would benefit from it :)ย

            2. 4

Hye, I am planning to push my datascience community. Iย  started with blogging and have integrated a forum on my blog but I don't have lots of visitors over their, so I will work on increasing the traffic to my channel. Any recommendations would be appreciated.ย

Also, I would be posting about some cool tech stuff soon on remote clan.

              Last one, Cricket๐Ÿ˜…

              1. 1

Love your plans and I am keen to see your tech posts ๐Ÿ˜Ž

The data science community sounds cool - can you share the link? Integrating the forum on your blog (I am guessing this is like comments section on each post) is the right start but I would strongly recommend focusing on SEO from day 1 to get really sustainable traffic.

                1. 1

Yes the blog page is datascienceoverflow.comย

I have integrated forum for beginners to discuss about datascience their learning and doubts here datascienceoverflow-community

So, I am still learning, doing and working on it to make it more popular. Through SEO and other possible ways.ย

                  1. 1

A community of data science enthusiasts? Interesting! I am eager to see this take shape.

                    1. 1

Thanks a lot for this motivation.

                    2. 1

Looks nice. I can see that you've built it in Wordpress - great choice, it's going to be easy for you to make SEO improvements given great plugins like Yoast SEO.

                2. 3

This week, I have planned to develop a writing habit. Thinking whether starting a newsletter on Substack would push me to build this routine.

                  1. 1

That's nice Mark. I actually did something similar a year or so back. Made a simple structure for a newsletter series and posted it on LinkedIn to see if people would be interested to read. Lot of people commented saying that they would be interested and that's how I began to write regularly.

I don't write that newsletter anymore but it surely got me into the habit of writing :)

                  2. 3

This week I have both work and personal plans.

Work-wise, the team and I are brainstorming a couple of seasonal promos for Creately, while working remotely. This is the first time we are attempting this in a fully remote environment. So let's see ๐Ÿ˜‰.

On the personal space, planning out some home decoration arrangement for the holidays. Will be working on them this weekend๐ŸŽ….

Decemeber is a month where work-life balance seems to be more life than work ๐Ÿงšโ€โ™‚๏ธ

                    1. 1

Haha, so true. December thankfully is about more life than work ๐Ÿ˜Ž

I am keen to know how your remote brainstorming goes - do share your learnings when you've the time!

                    2. 3

Have a learning project that needs to be completed in a week.

Applying for jobs and being interview ready

                      1. 1

Great - wish you the best for the interviews, Meena.

                        What's the learning project about?

                        1. 1

It is on Android, with SQLITE and Room persistence.

P.S. I am messaging this from my new profile, delted the above duplicate profile

                          1. 1

Oh cool, mobile apps are super fun to build :)

                      2. 3

Working on designing the rituals for the company I have been giving consultancy for transitioning to a hybrid workplace.ย ย

I would love to hear about your experience with the rituals that work for remote teams.ย

                        1. 2

Wow, that's really nice. Would you be able to share a gist when you're done? I'm very keen to know about this.

From my experience & people/teams I've spoken to:

                          - Sharing your work achievements at a regular frequency (daily/weekly) & allowing everyone in the team to publicly comment or react.

                          - Giving everyone a specified amount each month/quarter that they can spend to recognise the effort of their teammates.

                          - Virtual celebrations - birthdays, pizza party, milestones etc. Even virtual lunch/dinner is a cool idea.

                          1. 2

Nice, that sounds like a very exciting project! We are working on getting some scheduled rituals going in our startup too.

                            Some things we decided:

                            - First, give out company swag/ kits which they find useful. Especially if they can use it while working or keep it on their desk, etc. - something that keeps them connected with the brand. Earphones with the company logo, laptop sleeves, coffee mugs, etc.

                            - Play some kind of game each month with all the team members involved (we are at 13 members, so still manageable). We intend to rotate the game planner such that each person gets a chance. The planning for the game will be done during work time.

                            - Birthday celebrations: Each person will get a cake and some other gift on their birthday. We hope to cut it together on the call.

                            - Festivals: Other than this, India is a festival rich country ๐Ÿ˜…. So, we will be sending some goodies at least once a quarter and celebrating it remotely.

                            Apart from this earlier:

                            - We had work standups each morning where each person shares their goal for the day and any updates they have from the previous one. We take out 15 mins at the beginning of these calls to just have non-work chats.

                            - We have a scheduled town hall every 2 months to give them an update on how the company is doing, what worked/what didn't, goal for the next 2 months, etc.

                            - In smaller teams, we have a weekly catch-up to discuss problems we are facing and would like to solve for.

                            - Among founders, we have a separate weekly catch-up so that we can discuss new initiatives that might get missed out in the daily run of things. These catch-ups also give us the opportunity to talk about general frustrations and have a bit of release ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I will add more if I remember more :). Would love to hear what else you have in mind!

                          2. 2

                            1. We had discussed about redesigning our dashboard at the startup I'm working at remotely which was very exciting as we are going to move from php to nuxt and it's going to improve the whole experience of the product by a lot. -

                            2. Slowly progressing with the startup I've started with my friends, that aims to teach coding in a fun way. Still in planning stage.

                            3. Wrote a blog post after a long time -

                            1. 1

                              That's amazing Akash.

Nice to know that you're starting up on the side. If you need help on any aspect or want feedback, share it here & we'll be happy to help :)

Loved your post - haven't used Moment.js myself but I can relate to the problem.
